How it’s calculated
The math is straightforward. The hard part is getting the pip value right when your account currency differs from the pair’s quote currency.
1. Risk amount = Account balance × Risk %
2. Pip value = Lot size × Pip size (in quote currency)
→ converted to account currency if needed
3. Position size = Risk amount ÷ (Stop loss × Pip value)
One standard lot = 100,000 units of the base currency. Pip size = 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for JPY pairs. For Gold (XAU/USD) we use 100 oz per lot and pip size 0.01.
Always verify against your broker’s position size tool before entering a live trade. Default exchange rates are placeholders and should be updated to reflect current market prices.
